How to Clean Range Hood Grease?

Cleaning a range hood is not on top of everyone’s to-do list, but it is very important in every home’s kitchen. I have heard of many of the cases pertaining to home fires that resulted from grease build up on range hoods, therefore, necessitating regular cleaning. In addition to that, the sight of greasy filters alone is not appealing. That is why I decided to let you learn how to clean the range hood grease. Here, I give you some tips on how to clean your range hood grease and give it a whole new look.

What you will need

Before beginning your cleaning process, it is important to make sure that you put the fan off and clear the stove of debris. I recommend that you do this rather than waiting to wash more items after you are done with your hoods.  You will require the following for a successful wash:

  • Degreasing dish soap
  • Scrub brush
  • Boiling water
  • Dishcloth
  • Baking soda

After collecting all the above items, follow the steps below:

Using boiled water

For range hood grease, get the hottest water you possibly can. Pour the water either in a big sink or large buckets enough to hold the range hoods. Remove the hoods from their original position and let them sit in hot water for some time. This not only removes the excessive greases but also gives time for any soot and foods attached to your hoods to break off.

At this stage, I recommend that you add some baking soda to the water before you start scrubbing the hoods using your long-handled brush. Washing your hoods requires no excessive force because they have wire mesh for their making.

Though I have not tried it personally, I see many people adding degreasing soap to the baking soda to remove the grease efficiently. Use a different bucket or sink to rinse your range hoods. Repeat the procedure until the rinsing water remains clear.

Using degreasing dish soap

Degreasing dish soap works hand in hand with hot water. In my experience, I can attest to the fact that degreasing soap works magic as compared to any other product that you can find in the market. For effective cleaning, mix the degreasing soap with hot water then soak your hoods. Let them sit for some minutes then use a scrub to remove the grease easily.

Using commercial cleaners

If you do not like degreasing soaps, you can opt for the many commercial cleaners available in your nearby stores. Remember, the type of cleaner will depend on the type of range hood that you own. For stainless steel hoods, you will need a softer commercial cleaner. This is because hoods with steel materials tend to scratch and give in to pressure easily. Also, be very careful while scrubbing with your brush.

Some types of oil

You can also use some specific type of oils to clean your range hoods. For instance, vegetable oils can sound like an odd solution bearing in mind that you are trying to get rid of grease in the first place. Contrary to the expectations of many, I have found success in removing grease by using these oils by balancing their slick nature. However, only the experienced can pull this trick. In that case, do not try it if you are a beginner.

White vinegar and water

A reaction between the chemical components of grease and white vinegar can also lead to you having clean range hoods. Boiled water makes the process easier by acting as a catalyst for the reaction. Some people suggest that apple cider vinegar can also work though I have never taken the trouble of trying that myself.

Even though cleaning your range hoods is not the fanciest of tasks, it is one that you must do because of the benefits that come with it. Cleaning your range hood grease not only makes your hood clean but also keeps you safe from kitchen fires that start because of grease build.
